Fixing A Leaky Tap
I am fond of reading books and I have read many books on plumbing just to get some idea on how to tackle small plumbing issues at home so that I can avoid calling a plumber each time and save my money.
The most common plumbing problem that most of you must have faced at home is a leaking tap. It is very possible with a little time and the correct tools for almost anyone to repair leaking or dripping taps.
It is always advisable to take prompt actions when it comes to any plumbing issues. If left for a longer time, a leaking tap can leave stains on the sink/baths or can damage the tap entirely. Above all it leads to huge water wastage.
Usually the washer of the leaking tap need to be replaced. But, it can also be caused by a damaged valve seating. If the drip is from a mixer nozzle, then change both tap washers.
If you notice a tap leaking at the faucet, then you just need to washer. Note that the task of changing the washer should be performed in a fully off position. You can easily get a washer from any plumbing supplies store.
For replacing the washer, first turn off the main cork. Use a spanner to uncork the tap top. Remove the damaged washer and replace it with a new one which should be good in quality. Now cover it again and tighten it with the spanner well so that it does not leak again.
When repairing a tap, its a good idea to insert the plug and place a towel into the bowl of the sink, to ensure any small objects do not manage to escape. To avoid damaging a tap, when using a wrench either wrap the jaws of the wrench with plastic tape, or place a rag around the tap and use the wrench over the top.
Taps which are now very much a fashion item come in different styles and colors. Not all taps are built to last, so check the quality if you are buying for the long term. Chromium-plated brass taps are the most durable. Check that the taps you are considering will fit the layout of holes in the basin for which they are intended. So, the secret to avoid leaking taps is to only install good quality taps.
